overhead cranes
does anyony know of a good ref. for the design of overhead cranes?
try aisc design guide 7 for industrial buildings.
the aisc also has a spreadsheet program for designing oh cranes that works quite well...

ntpe,
try the cmaa spec #70 by the crane manufacturers association of america.
no book or specs. explain you how to design crane.
also you did not reveal what type of crane you want to design.
if you give me more detail i can help you.

i'm not sure what echet is saying about no book or spec. here is what is available to help design overhead cranes and their support structures.
cmaa 70 "specification for top running bridge & gantry type multiple girder electric overhead traveling cranes.
cmaa 74 "specification for top running & underhung single girder electric traveling cranes utilizing under running trolley hoist"
the cmaa documents cover design of the crane with guidelines for structural, mechanical and electrical.
asce design guide 7 part 2 covers design of buildings supporting overhead traveling cranes and their runway girders.
aisc offers a spread sheet (for educational purposes it states) using aisc design guide 7 to design crane runway girders. it can be downloaded at
specifically, i would like to know what vertical and lateral impact is recommended for both monorail and gantry cranes. i have the cmaa 74 and the aisc 7 but these don't address my question. thanks
my old aisc steel manual asd 9th edition section a4.2 & a4.3 gives the vertical and horizontal impact forces for cranes. |
