shear strength of pin connection
i am checking the shear strength of a connection that is using a pin instead of a bolt. does it still fall under the criteria of a bolt, just design for it without including the threads? see attached calculation. thanks
and there is no bolt tension and associated frictional resistance.

you're using 1/2 ftu as fsu.
you're calculating the allowable shear per shear face (there's two of them reacting the applied load)
yeah, it's as though you're shearing the shank of a bolt.
there is also bolt bending to be considered (that's reasonably under the applied load)
don't forget about bolt bearing checks. |
