sill nailing for wood shear walls
i started to review the typical shear wall nailing schedule used in my office and i'm having a little trouble. our typical detail for multi-story applications has shear transfer from the story above through sill nailing into the rim joist below which is connected with a35 angles to the top plate below. the sill plate sits on top of the floor sheathing so the sill nailing must go through the 2x sill plate, 3/4" plywood shetahing into the rim joist. the sill nailing in our schedule is 16d, which would appear to not be long enough for adequate penetration into the rim joist. should we be using 20d sill nailing?
you could use 20d nailing, but i would consider that the plywood is nailed to the rim joist. try to justify transferring the force from the sill plate, to the plywood, to the rim joist.

we specify en from the plywood to the rim, but don't take any credit for it. we apply a penetration reduction, as well as a 1/3 increase, for the 16d through the 2x sill down into the rim. then if a 3x sill is required, we specify lag bolts instead of nails.
we have also disregarged the nailing from sill to rim completely and specified ltp4's (flat a35's) from the sill to the rim. this was actually done at the request of one of our contractors. |
