soil retaining temporary shoring
hi everyone,
i was wondering if there is any formal criteria for the allowable deflection of a temporary shoring soldier beam. this shoring is supposed to retain the face of excavated soil.
thank you
i don't believe there are specific criteria for temporay shoring lateral deflections. however, large deflections cause settlement of the soil behind the wall. also as the wall deflects, as moment at the base of the pile develops as the weight of the dflected soil overhangs the excavation. for small deflections and short walls, this is not significant. for larger walls and deflections, it can be. i typically try to limit deflections to less than an inch, or review the design carefully if larger deflections are allowed. one thing to remeber is that unlike most structural steel design, the computed deflections are an estimate. you may see half to twice the anticipated deflection, so although i know of no specific guidelines, it is important and requires good engineering judgement.
for general information see chapter 10 and appendix f, of the "california trenching & shoring manual" (free .pdf download) at this link
