hi all,
when you model tf frames do you put a joint (i.e pinned) at all connections.  this seems weird b/c if you mortise into a meber it still has substantial capacity and won't really act like a hinge.

pinned.
a glued mortised joint will have some moment capacity but your design should show that it is adequate if you are going to use it.
definately pinned.  i have designed some "moment connections" for a timber structure, but only by using steel plates on each side of the timber with a lot of screws.
what about in a situation when you have a rafter that is continuous and a collector tie is connected at mid span.  that not really a pinned connection and this would through a moment into the rafter.  any thoughts?
as far as the rafter is concerned this would not be a pinned connection since the rafter is continuous (not spliced), but for the collector to rafter i would consider it a pinned connection.
that's what i would think as well (rafter not pinned).  so at this point you would need to calacualte the section properties and anlyze for shear and bending at that point.  agree?
agree - taking into account any possible reduced section due to the connection if it were mortised, etc.
