vehicle collision load
re: canadian bridge code s6-2000
section 3.15 vehicle collision load.
horizontal static force for collision load = 1400 kn at 1.2 m above ground.
question:
1. do we have to design the foundation for this load?
2. referring to question no. 1, does it depend on the type of structures or barrier protection?
hi macan1,
if you have any bridge structure within 10m of the edge of pavement without a barrier of some sort, ie guardrail or barrier wall, yes you must design foundations to handle the load specified. the best way around this is to check with the local dot as to whether they will install a barrier in this region. maintenance is an issue here though.

protect your bridge with something. that is a huge load to design for, both for the column and the foundation. |
