wood bending members endnotched on compression face
this question pertains to the section 3.4.3.2(e) of the 2001 nds.  this formula is completely different than the one listed in the 1994 ubc.  the 94 ubc lists the value of d' rather than dn.  the 1994 ubc formula seems to reflect a chamfer cut beam rather than the notch shown in the 2001 nds.  can anyone clarify that the value should be dn and not d'.  and does this apply to chamfer cuts or just straight notches.  lastly, does this same set of equations apply to glb's?
thanks
check out our whitepaper library.
for glb's, contact the manufacter, but they will probably tell you not to notch it.
for years i have specified end notching of glulam beams placed in masonry walls on embedded steel hangers.  these are usually 24fv4's, but should be ok with 24fv8's too.  just make sure that the notch need not be more than two to three inches, and sloped to the face of the wall.  this is just to facilitate installation.

thanks for the link.  however, i don't believe that it mentions reasons for changing formulas about notching on the compression side.  i was hoping someone could give reasoning why the change in "d" between formula.  also, does this formula apply to chamfer cuts beams as well or just straight notched beams
