solidworks vanishing screen???
hey guys,
what is the deal when you've been working in solidworks for a while, and suddenly your desktop wallpaper shows through your model? you mouse over what should be your model, and all you get are wire frame lines. the screen isn't updating.
some think it has to do w/ the screen saver. some say you have to reboot to cure it.
our machines are configured in the realm of:
- dual xeon 3ghz processor
- 2gb of ram (sometimes 4gb)
- nvidia quadro fx 1700
any ideas or tips???
sounds like a graphics issue. make sure your driver is the sw approved version. then, if you still have issues, run in software opengl mode and see if you have the same issue.

i agree with handleman, see if it goes away when you don't use the card's hardware accelerator. don't forget you must set this up before you open any files or the option will be greyed out, go to > tools> options> system options> performance and check "use software opengl" , then load your problematic file and see if it's stable in this mode. if it is, then it's almost certainly a video card driver problem.
i had exactlty the same problems when i first installed sw07 x 64bit and it was a graphics card driver problem. however, in my case i was getting the problem with a certified driver and only got rid of it with the latest non-certified driver from the manufacturer's website, so don't give up if the approved driver doesn't cure it!

sw2007x64 sp3.0 pentium p4 3.6ghz, 4gb ram ati firegl v7100 driver: 8.323.0.0
sw2007x32 sp4.0 pentium p4 3.6ghz, 2gb ram nvidia quadro fx 500 driver: 6.14.10.7756
i installed 2009 ev yesterday, to open it with this exact problem. i updated the graphics card driver based on the sw site recommendation, and problem solved.
i have also seen this problem occur when opening a 2007 assembly in 2008, before updating all the parts in the assembly to 08. the graphics will start to crash, the desktop will start to show up, and edges will begin to dynamically highlight. updating the assembly previous to opening it in the 08 version solves the problem.
