1981 6x6x5/16 tube column fy=
quick question, i am working with a building from 1981. i have drawings but there is no mention to the yield strength of the columns. the beams are 50 ksi.
i was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on what was the typical yield strength of tube columns? i know that per the aisc 9th edition which came out late 80, typically it seams 46 ksi.
thanks
this goes back a long way in my memory but i thought we were using 42 ksi for tubes at one time and then switched to 46 ksi.
the 8th edition manual, which i believe came out in 1980, shows 46 ksi in their tube column tables.  the availability table shows three types for square tubes, with a note that implies the 46 ksi version was most readily available.
a500 grade a - fy=39 ksi - fu=45 ksi
a500 grade b - fy=46 ksi - fu=58 ksi
a500 grade c - fy=50 ksi - fu=62 ksi
the 7th edition manual, from 1970, has tube column tables for both 36 ksi (a501) and 46 ksi (a500 grade b).
nutte:
you jogged my memory....i think it was 36 ksi that we were using.
back then we always spec'd 46.

why not check the loads and see what fy is reasonable based on the loads.
else perform a charpy test or destructive sampling to verify the fy.
