general flag notes
i am having a discussion about the use of periods in flag notes.  the argument being presented is that since the numbers in the general notes use periods, the triangular flags we use should also contain the period.
i've never seen them used in the medical device or manufacturing jobs i had before, but perhaps aerospace is different?

i don't see that it says either way in asme y14.100-2004 4.26 drawing notes.  it shows symbols (rectangle, hex & triangle) but not actual examples that i can see.
the examples in 14.24-1999 types and applications of engineering drawings don't appear to have periods in the flag symbols.
however, in 14.24 the notes in the general note section with flag symbols don't have a period after the number here.  general notes without the flag symbol do appear to have periods.
make sense?

i have never used periods in flag notes, but have no documentation to back me up.  we don't use periods in flag note for the simple reason of spacing.  adding a period shifts the number to the left, making it a little less clear, especially on reduced size prints.
believe it if you need it or leave it if you dare.fff"> - robert hunter
i leave them off also.

i couldn't fine anything that defined the use either.
i am used to seeing "arrow flag notes" and general notes without periods inside the flag symbol (square, triangle, hex), and numbered general notes without flag symbols to always have periods after the number.
ewh, you raise a good point that i didn't argue before.  many of our drawings are made on d size, and printed on b paper, but sometimes they are printed on a.  i'll have to try to find a bad example to support the "readability" argument.  i guess my "it looks dumb" position wasn't strong enough.

what can i say... it looks dumb to me also.

i think you got what i said and seems to agree with ewh & ctopher but here's an image that matches 14.24:

i'm not sure, but i thought i had seen in "drawing requirements manual, 10th edition" something about the periods. i had a copy at my last company, don't have it anymore.
i got it from global engineering documents (an his group company)

in my 5th edition copy of the "drawing requirements manual", it does not mention periods after the flag note number, but does show examples without the period.

my (big aerospace prime name omitted) drafting standard, shows flag notes without punctuation. while not specifically saying to omit the period, it does define both the flag (5 sided in this case) and the location (centered) of the text within the flag. in doing so, there is no punctuation with the text.

there is no preference either way as far as i can tell.  in fact, my cad software (solidworks) has the flag notes available as either.
i would venture to guess that a flag note in the general notes could have a period simply because you are adding a flag outline to the note that would already be there.  so if you want to use the perios there, i still would not use periods in the flags that appear on body of the drawing itself.  this is just all opinion of course, because the standard speaks not of this.
