proper masking notes
does anyone know the proper method for noting an area to be masked from a coating on an enginering drawing? i have a part that will be painted everywhere except for a bore and i cannot find how to note this in any of the asme y14 specs. i am looking for a graphical method and not so much a text note, if it exists. thank you.
check out our whitepaper library.
i've always approached it using a flag note, indicating to "apply paint per... unless otherwise indicated." i would then add this flag to the bore dimension with the text "do not paint" or something to that effect. i don't think the specs get that deep into the details for this type of situation, but someone else here may be able to direct us to the aplicable standard.

i agree with ewh that i don't think the spec goes into this much detail. i've seen combinations of hatching to indicate where, and a note to say what, or just a note. i've never seen just a symbol.
i will say this much, you don't want to tell them what or how to mask. you want to tell them what surface is to be free of the finish/coating. it's a subtle difference much of the time but better complies with asme y14.5m-12994 1.4e. also for some combinations of material/finish/process it can in fact be preferable to part machine the item, treat it & then finish machining the areas to be free of coating. telling them what areas to mask theoretically precludes this.
in your case, i'd put a 'flag' next to the dimension for the bore to a note. in the note i'd say something like "surface of hole to be free of coating".
kenat,
i agree with ewh and kenat.
