rust prevention on metal tooling?
i am tryng to find the best way to keep metal tooling from rusting while in storage. we keep our tooling in an enviroment controlled room, but yet we still get rust on the metal. if anyone has a good idea on a chemical or coating that we could get to prevent the tooling from rusting during storage please let me know.
easiest way, but somewhat messy, is coat it with oil.  a local 10w-30 or 10w-40 works just fine.  you can even get some paper to place over the coated areas to inhibit the oil from running off of the part.
you can check out fed-std-297, qpl-tt-c-530-3, mil-hdbk-46164, astm-d665, astm-d1748.  they deal with rust protection, but i don't know all the specifics.
the paper can be found with uu-p-268, but has been canceled and replaced with a-a-203 & a-a-1894.
another general standards are mil-prf-3420.
mix the oil (10w-30/40 good quality) with wd-40 to spread it uniformly and ensure penetration everywhere.  wd-40 evaporates in 30 days.  oil can stay in place for years (i protected the frame of a car this way with good results after 10 years outside storage).
there are many commercially available products which include corrosion-preventative additives if you wish.
also mil-/federal spec products referenced well in the usnavy corrosion prevention manual.
