a325x bolts
if i have a 3/8" plate head side, bolted to a 1/2" plate nut side and i have 1/8" of thread in the 1/2" plate can i still use the shear capacity for an a325x bolt?
check out our whitepaper library.
only if you can isolate your shear plane to the point between the plates. otherwise, no.
ron,
the 3/8" plate is a gusset and the 1/2" plate is an end plate on a tension rod. how could you isolate the the shear plane to the point between the plates? thanks for your response.
if the 1/8" thread is into the plate on the nut side, the threads are excluded from the shear plane between the plates. so the answer is yes.
chideb...you are in a single shear condition. as you described the potential mobilization of the shear, hokie66 is correct, as the shear plane is between the plates. the nut has no restraint other than its compression to the plate, therefore no shear on the nut side. the 3/8" plate is fixed, so not an issue on the head side either. |
