aluminum pole in concrete?
do standard aluminum structural shapes/alloys have a problem (chemical) with being embedded in concrete?
thank you,
seattlemike
check out our whitepaper library.
the aluminum should have an asphaltic coating or some other way to electrochemically separate the two materials.
hi ucfse,
is there a difference between "asphaltic" coating and "bituminous" coating?
see "nonferrous metals in contact with concrete", out-of-print document from the portland cement association, on this page of my website
not only is concrete not good for aluminum, aluminum is not good for the concrete.  concrete codes prohibit embedded aluminum.
black electrical tape wrapped one layer thick with a small over-lap has been used by me for years. also, make sure that water cannot fill the embedded post, i have had split posts and split concrete due to freezing. years ago i had a commercial am antenna (lingo pole) split vertically for about 40-feet.
