anchor bolt design
anyone know of good supplemental work book for anchor bolt design into concrete in conjunction with aci 318 design guide? thank you.
aisc design guide 1 addresses base plates, but also has a good section on anchor bolt design.
in theory, you should use appendix d of aci 318. i suggest using aci 318-08, as it has some updated provisions on how to take into account the contribution from reinforcement.
but if all you're looking for is a safe and dirty way to design anchor bolts for tension and shear, then aisc dg1 is probably the best way to go.
aisc design guide for baseplates was a decent one, but had all kinds of mistakes.  pca notes on aci 318 is decent.
thank you frv and structuraleit very much! aisc dg1 is unavailable at this time from aisc but does anyone of you happen to know where you can get aci/pca literature at a very minimal cost?
pca notes is around $100.  if you do a google search you may be able to come up with a paper or two that does anchor rod design.
hilti has a large amount of tech info on their fastening products, such as the north american product technical guide, as well as a program called profis anchor available free on their website that will analyze base plates and anchor/concrete loads/stresses.
both the info and program reference some of the above-mentioned standards.
i have no affiliation with hilti, i've just found their support products very helpful.
rant alert
according to metal building suppliers,
anchor bolt diameter
anchor bolt number
and anchor bolt layout
can be and is usually specified by them. but, if you need a recommendation when the bolt is wrong.... you need to get the footing guy to sign off on it because they don't design anchor bolts just the frame.
i guess i'm glad i took the geotechnical exam
anchorage in concrete construction?
by rolf eligehausen, rainer mallée, john f. silva

bones has it, this book is very clear with figures and test data supporting 318 appendix d.
and to further darthsoilsguy2 rant, the spacing of the metal building manufacturer's bolt pattern violates the minimum allowed by aci.
i have had that problem with the metal bldg guys violating the spacing criteria and edge distance criteria stipulated in aci app d but up front communication with them will eliminate this problem.  if you tell them you plan on using 3/4" diameter cast-in-place astm f1554 gr 36 heavy hex headed anchors for example and give them the spacing and edge distance criteria, they will size and orient the base plates accordingly.  they are a little behind the power curve since they only design and detail from the base plate on up.  some other schmuck has to design the anchorage and footings.
