augercast and driven concrete pile embedment
we do many jobs with driven concrete and augercast piles. our detailing has always shown the pile embedded 4" into the concrete pilecap and the bottom reinforcing 3" above that (for 7" total cover). i believe it is more/less industry standard in fl.
it seems to possibly be dated back when piles did not have reinforcing into the cap and embedment was actually a problem (for tension and fixed-head condition). now all of our augercast piles have continuous reinforcing into the cap and our driven piles have reinforcement drilled and epoxied into the pile and embedded in cap.
question: for compression and tension piles, does a 1" embedment seem reasonable? this lowers the bottom steel (better strut and tie) and creates shallower pilecaps.
