bolted beam to beam angle connections
     dear sir/ madam,

we have framing with beams w12x22 and w10x12. the web thk. of both of it 3/16". the same time we use double-angle
( (2)-l 4x3 1/2x5/16 )connections with wide gage 5 1/2".
it seems to me we can not do it because max. spacing should be 3/16" x 24 = 4.5" and in that case we should use narrow gage 4" ( (2)-l 3 1/2x3x5/16 ).
what do you think about it?
sincerely,

is the large bolt spacing an attempt to use (2) bolts instead of (3) with a "full depth" shear connection?
you're going overboard reading into the maximum bolt spacing requirements.  i believe those apply to surfaces in contact, and you don't have 5.5" of contact in this case.  there's a gap in between the angles.
even without the gap, as if it were an end plate, i wouldn't apply this to the spacing (gage) you're looking at.  maybe that's not right, but that's what i would do.
    dear nutte,
thank you for your answer.
it seems to me all bolts consist of one group of bolts.
i suppose that this requirement provides a work of bolts together and reduce deformations in connection - as web as angles.
what do you think?
sincerely,
this requirement provides close enough spacing, and thus clamping between plies, to prevent moisture from getting between the plates and corroding the material.
   dear nutte,
what you would do if you need to make built-up beam (girder) with web 3/16" thk. and to make assembly with bolts or rivets?
sincerely,
hi, borisng:
i am not quite catch your question. to me, i don't see any problem with double 4x3 1/2x5/16 angle clamping on w10x12 i-beam web, then, the two flat face of double angle bolt to one side face of the w12x22 i-beam web. so what is your problem? maybe, i misunderstood your question?
by the way, on aisc 13th edition, the thickness of the web of w12x22 is 0.26" (or 1/4"), not 3/16".
    dear structlin,
there is some limitations for max. distance in bolt's (rivet's)group between bolts (rivets)as you know.
one of it for web 3/16" thk. is 3/16" x 24 = 4 1/2".
sincerely,
dear structlin,
sorry, i mean w12x14.
sincerely,
usual gage "g" for 3 1/2" leg is 2". for 3/16" web, the minimum distance between bolts is 2"+2"+3/16" = 4 3/16".
round up to 4 1/4", or 4 1/2", would this work?
