cantilevered deck
i know that the standard practice is to embed the cantilevered joist into the floor system twice the length of the cantilever.  however, i have a client who wants to go out further and i was wondering if anyone knew how i could do this.  thanks in advance.
you need to run the numbers and see what is needed for what he wants.

the 2:1 ratio is a common rule of thumb to avoid uplift in the backspan in most scenarios. however, you can make any cantilever you want as long as you design for the   
this is why they taught you design at university.

i do not like rules of thumb. while they may be a good starting point for a blank calculation pad, you may very well be ok with only l=1 or even 1/2. just run the numbers as someone suggested, and see what you need.
