c&c for windows and fl building code
in the florida residential code, there's a requirement that all windows meet the required dp rating, regardless of how the roof trusses are designed (enclosed or partially-enclosed).  in exposure c, a 30-ft high home in 150 mph wind zone can get a c&c pressure of -61.5 psf for a 10 sq.ft window.  and of course everyone wants lots of big windows to enjoy their view.
i'm finding it hard to locate windows that can meet the code requirements and are financially feasible.  so how on earth are people building homes in high wind zones in fl, and getting permits through the building departments?
use of hurricane shutters to protect the windows will meet the requirements of many building codes. here is a typical link for information on the various types of hurricane shutters:
thanks, slideruleera.  but do hurricane shutters allow windows to meet the c&c pressure requirements, or only the wind-born debris protection requirements?
slta - properly designed and installed hurricane shutters do provide necessary protection from both wind-borne debris and wind pressure. the shutters have to be anchored to structural
how much of florida is in category 150 mph wind speeds for design?
civilperson, not all that much really, but we've had homeowners applying for the fortified...for safer living program through ibhs, which requires an increase of 20 mph in the design wind speed.  we've also had homeowners choose to increase their design wind speed beyond that required by the code, but when doing that, the house must be designed as if it really were at the artificially high speed.
