concrete finishing with rock salt
we are finishing an area around a swimming pool and one of the finishes being considered is a textured stone finish.
i was told rock salt was pressed onto the surface and then rinsed off after the concrete set up.
any thoughts?
my concern is the long term effects: surface spalling/cracking that rock salt may cause.
thanks
jjf
i've never heard of using rock salt and would question it too.
alternatives might be:
1.  a surface retarder and then a wash after initial set?
2.  sandblasted surface.
3.  stamped concrete.
i would be concered about increased corrosion due to the chlorides and other things penetrating the concrete.  that being said, it seems to be popular enough for side walks and patios.  i'm sure if you give everything good consideration then you'll do fine with what ever finish you choose.
i have heard of rock salt being used. it gives a textured finish, but i am sure that this needs to be applied properly. check with aci i am sure they have information.
i have seen this done - it works. produces a very interesting looking finish. usually considered appropriate only in warm climates. here are general instructions:
great links, thanks to all for the feedback.

in florida they use this effect often.  its called keystone as is to simulate keystone (ston) dah!
i have only seen this done as a topping to the structural slab on grade.  they use a white cement and silica sand which gives it a white finish and not grey.  most of the time is is lined to give the look of individual stones.
