construction joints
i am desinging a two-way slab and wanted some input on location of construction joints and crack control. the aci 301 calls for construction joints to be placed in the middle third of the span and perpendicular to the main reinforcement. in a two-way slab the "main" reinforcement is running in both directions. do i need any sawcut control joints as well? the owner is very particular about cracks in his slab. thanks for your help in advance.
middle third of two-way slabs does go in both directions, but if you simply keep the joints away from columns (draw a box around each column to define the middle third distance in both directions) you can simply arrange your joints in most any direction within this defined space.
just keep the joints perpendicular to either column line direction.
do not sawcut joints in any structural slab.
