double 2x8 w/ 1/2" pl.
need help. i have a double 2x8 header s. pine that has a 1/2" x 7" steel plate bolted to one outside face of the header. when analizing the header the wood by itself will not carry the load. need to know how to check the design with the steel plate. what becomes the allowable bending stress? etc.
thanks
this is a fairly simple design. you will need to transform the section - once into all wood and again into all steel - using the modular ratio n=es/ew. then check your allowable against your actual.
this question has been addresses a number of times in this forum. search the forum. also, an article was written in stucture magazine recently. go to:
it has been my experience that the wood doesn't help that much, except to brace the steel plate. i usually design the steel for the whole load.
indeed. many engineers size the steel to carry the whole load. in the original question asked, the 1/2" x7" steel plate would carry about 73% of the load.
