footing design w/ lateral load
i am trying to design a footing for a metal frame building. i have been given vertical ll, dl, uplift and a lateral force. the vertical loads i have a good handle on but how do you design for a lateral load at the base plate - footing interface? do you need to use vertical rebar and design it as a cantilever beam with a point load at the end? also, is there any standard requirement for vertical rebar in a footing?

you need to install "hairpins" around the columns and into the lab, if you can do so. the slab hairpin will resist the lateral load and hence the footing will no see any of the lateral loads.
this is the common practice for pre-engineered metal buildings.
i have used some software from
there are three ways to handle this type of loading:
1.  design as a cantileved pier with enough mass and rebar to overcome the overturning moment, this generally the most expensive.
2.  design using a continous tie-rod between piers on opposite sides of the building, still expensive and subject to problems if the tie-rod is ever cut during future remodeling.
3.  design with hairpins, usually the least expensive and easiest for construction.  there are a couple of other threads on this topic in this forum.
