grade 2 bolt torque in fiberglass material.
would anyone have any idea what bolt torque would be used to connect a steel plate to a fiberglass plate?
ffiled asked what is the purpose of the connection.
the fiberglass is a small "tank" like structure with flat flanges. the steel plate is part of a steel assembly that support the weight of the tank and its contents. we are concerned that too much torque will crack the fiberglass.
check out our whitepaper library.
what type of forces will act on the bolt?  shear, tention, bearing?  you may not want to torque the bolts at all.  just finger tighten or 1/8 turn.
spike,
snug tight would be appropriate. if you over tighten the bolts, they may damage the epoxy resin of the fiberglass that holds the fiberglass threads together. if the resin is punctured and the fiberglass begins to "splinter" it can be repaired but is a mess.
good luck.
there is a procedure for computing bolt torque limits for fiberglass (frp)flanges in asme rtp-1.  you will need to know the properties of the flange.
