pile design
hi everybody,
can anybody suggest me a good book giving detailed expalanation and procedure for pile design?
thanks.
structural design or geotechincal design?
when in doubt, just take the next small step.

structural design
there is a discussion worth looking at here for bored piles.
for small diameter piles, such as 12" and 16" i often use a single 15m (#5) bar x 19'8" long (3 bars from a 12m long bar).
for 24" diameter, i often use 6-15m bars with ties at 36" o/c and 3 ties top at 12.
dik
check out aci543r-00 design of concrete piles
it has the information you are looking for.
any geotechnical book that goes into detail of broms method. i use:
craig "soil mechanics"
bowels "geotechnical design"
tomilson "pile design"
the above mentioned geotechnical textbooks are great for determining soil reactions which can help you calculate the actions on the piles. for the structural design of piles you will need a reinforced concrete textbook and concrete code for your local authority. i use
mcgregor "reinforced concrete mechanics and design"
i haven't found a textbook or paper that deals with computer modelling of soil as elastic springs. any help?
dik,
don't you need to have a minimum steel area of 0.5% of gross area of pile??
1-15m won't even cover that for a 12" pile.
why... they work as laterally supported plain concrete...
thanks to all..!!
would need to find books recommended.
does anybody use staad or any other analysis software to analyse the piles?is it a good idea ?

referring to my earlier post, i haven't found a good reference that explains modelling the soil reaction as elastic springs. there is a little information in the bowles textbook about how to do this however i am unable to get a geotechnical engineer to give me a modulus of subgrade reaction so i have had to make assumptions for this. when modelling the soil reaction as an elastic spring, the soil reaction will be more towards a triangular distribution oppossed to the uniform distribution that is assumed in the more traditional broms method.
