press foundation design - dynamic wt. versus static wt.
is is reasonable to assume that the dynamic (live) load component of a stamping press is equal 50% of the dead weight of the press with tooling (die)?
the owner has stated that they have used this 50% value on prior press installations.
for example,
press weight = 640 kip
die weight = 70 kip
static weight (dead load) = 710 kip
dynamic weight (live load) = 0.5(710) = 355 kip?
total design load (unfactored)= 1065 kip?
vilhelm,
i recently designed a mat foundation for a 50 ton generator. the manufacturer specified that the dead load of the mat be equal to twice the weight of the generator to offset the dynamic effect. i have seen other manufacturers specify five times the weight of the equipment. i think it really depends on the type of equipment and the dynamic effect it produces. 50% may be ok for your application, but i would definitely get it in writing from the owner.
good luck.
