round hss or sched 40 pipe connections: good textbook?
hi all,
you may have discovered that aisc's hollow structural sections connections manual is very thin.
can anyone recommend a good textbook on designing connections where schedule 40 pipes or round hss meet?
in particular, i am designing steel trusses using pipe shapes.  i need a design manual to check the connections where different size pipes meet at k-joints.  the top and bottom chords are continuous.
thank you,
mike
try "hollow structural section connections and trusses" by packer and henderson.  it is based on canadian standards, but is a good reference.
the lincoln arc welding foundation has some publications, including the widely known blodgett book.  they also have "tubular steel structures" by troitsky.  these are older books but they are still full of information and were $15 us last i checked.
i've used aisc hss manual. also very helpful is structural weldeing code -aws d1.1. these 2 references give pretty much everything you need for gapped connections (branch members not overlapping). i'd recommend using gap connections when you can. this makes designing and fabricating much easier and allows you to use the equations from the 2 above references. easiest way i found to make the connections gap and still meet at work point is to make chords a little bigger than web members. good luck!
