seismic risk
hi!
our client gave as the design assumption to be used in the design of a structural steel frame for circular bins. they gave us the horizontal acceleration (seismic risk ) of 0.6m/s². maybe somebody could shed light on this matter. if somebody could give me a sample  calculation  to get the seismic risk it would be a great help for me.
thanks and best regards.

hi 041964
i am no expert in this case, however from previous experience i think this is what you do:-
find the mass of your structure and multiply this by the acceleration given ie:-
                           f=m*a
apply this force horizontally to the structure through its centre of gravity and analyse the force on the structure and see how it alters the other static or dynamic forces that are present ie:- will this seismic force cause a failure.
hope this helps

you could also determine what the local code jurisdiction is to determine if they have adopted the 2000 ibc for example.  the 2000 ibc addresses how to calculate seismic forces based on the site soil and the spectral accelerations for a .2 and 1 second period. the code also provides recommendations on the structural steel design.
