indicates that the required passive pressure may be developed in 1 or 2 meters of embedment.
this may be also the case where there is sound rock in the plot, since it will suport behind the socket.
however, the release of elastic stresses causes inwards (towards the foundation) displacement of the rock retaining wall. this movement may be say up to 200 mm, but usually less and cannot be prevented, because it involves great lengths of soil around the excavation, say 200 m beyond.
50 mm allowance has proven many times insufficient and it is suggested to at least account 100 mm. then adequate reinforcement and a compressible buffer of 100 mm is suggested in order to avoid unbearable pressures on the underground floors and accompanying unwanted structural work. the gap is many times beyond the foundation, hence your wall would be useless and rock will be being thought auto-stable, a pavement slab bridging the gap.
