strap blocking in gypsum shear wall
in reference to shear walls and the orientation of gypsum board applied to cold-formed steel studs, i am instructed by the wisconsin enrolled commercial building code to provide "strap blocking behind the horizontal joint". what is strap blocking? how is it applied or fastened? who is a manufacturer?
thank you!

are you sure they don't mean "strap bracing"?
the purpose of blocking shearwall panels prevents edge buckling. for lower values of shear, blocking for plywood on wood studs is not required. not so for table 2211.1(2). the gypboard is laid up horizontally, typically, and builds the wall upward from 4 ft. the code is looking for a light gage plate installed horizontally to the studs at 4 ft to provide a shear mechanism at that joint. we used 22 or 24 gage minimum x 4 or 6 inch coil stock. it comes in handy at 8 ft too by the way or in bathrooms for attachment of architectural features like curtain rods, pictures etc.
sorry about that, i should have said blocking for gypboard on wood studs at lower shear values is not required. i said plywood. all plywood shearwalls require blocking. |
