tension in steel plate -ligament strength
does anyone have a reference for stress analysing a steel plate with a number of relatively large holes closely spaced and in a straight line line perpendicular to the tension axis?
check out our whitepaper library.
seems like you might be able to adapt the u factor stuff from the 13th ed. aisc manual.  it's obviously a tension rupture problem.
this situation is normally found in some pressure vessels: e.g. tube holes drilled in a line parallel to the axis of a shell, therefore substantially submitted to a tension stress (the circumferential stress) perpendicular to the hole line.
asme viii div.1 essentially requires, for the calculation of shell thickness, the allowable stress in tension to be reduced by the efficiency of the ligament = 1 - h.dia/pitch.
the code also provides rules for unequal spacing, holes on diagonal lines and multiple hole rows.
