ts vs w section -cost-
what premium is paid for a tube column compared to a w section.
ts 6x6x3/16"  (14.5 #/ft.)
to a w8x24
which is more economical?
thanks!
if both are equally available, the bare cost comes down to weight of steel.  the tube would be the less expensive.  if you compare the cost of fabricating connections, you would have to speak to the steel fabricator.  single plate connections to tubes or w's do not vary greatly in my area.  however, if you have moment connections, different shops like to use different connections if the type of connection is left up to the fabricator.  this doesn't happen often because there are other constraints which may dictate the type of connection.  anyway, contact your local steel fab/supply shops and ask the same question.
in commercial grade buildings, you may want to consider more than just the cost of the steel. if the architect wants the wf columns furred out, but tube columns are ok just painted out, then the tubes become the obvious choice. in other words, be aware of the cost of the steel as well as the finishing cost if any.
2004 means building construction data shows the tube being 80% the cost of the comparable w section  bare costs.
ts to w shape # for # is slightly more in bare bone costs.  in this case the tube steel is more economical.
worthy considerations above.  thanks!
you should talk to a local steel supplier/ fabricator. steel prices are very volatile right now. pond for pound the cost of tube steel is typically more then a wide flange. also i have heard of difficulty getting tube sections at all the last month or so.
