usgs 2002 seismic data
what version of asce-7 and ibc allow you to use the 2002 usgs seismic data? we still have to use the ibc 2000 which uses the 1996 data.
the 2002 data is less conservative than the 1996 data in my area, but i don't see how i can justify using the 2002 data with the ibc 2000 or ibc 2003.
check out our whitepaper library.
asce 7-05 and ibc 2006 were the first model codes to explicitly use usgs 2002 data.
note that several state codes had/have provisions to allow the use of the new data even if not yet under the ibc 2006 (for example georgia was under the ibc 2000 until recently however the state provisions allowed the use of usgs 2002 data).
if the state does not specifically allow the use of the new data, then there is still another way out by using a site specific study - for example see ibc 2000: 1615.2. essentially you pay the geotechnical engineer a few extra bucks to "account for regional seismicity and geology etc etc..." - in my experience they give about the same values as you would get with the newer usgs 2002 data. |
