vehicle barriers
a project i am working on includes a few guard shacks that are protected from vehicle collision by cantilevered cast-in-place concrete walls. the design criteria for the barrier walls is to be aashto roadside design guide 3. as a building engineer, i do not have this reference. can someone summarize the design loads for me?
the basic collision load for aashto vehicles is 10 kips applied at the top of the barrier height (for most cases about 3' above roadway). there are several distribution diagrams in the official aashto design guide, but for bridge design of the safety barrier curb we use the 10 kip load. that load is then chased through the barrier and into the bridge slab - it sometimes controls the slab design.

just a reminder that the 10 kip load is distributed over a 5' width (2 kips/ft.) |
