very basic questions about response spectrum
hi ,
i have a question
1) regarding seismic response spectrum. what i donot understand is that how do we obtain the response spectrum of a building which is not physically exisitng?
thanks in advance
all the design efforts are targeted to produce something that doesn't exist. response spectrum aseismic design has of the building to be constructed a structural model, from which its dynamic properties are evaluated. if you give a look to dynamic structures by anil k. chopra you will see in the figures distinguished
response spectrum
standard design spectrum
design spectrum median and design spectrum median plus 1 sigma
elastic design spectrum
inelastic design spectrum
and an entire section
6.11 distinction between design and response spectra
so what basically happens is that entering the site and building properties we can select a design spectrum that is technically valid for all the cases of the kind. it is still called response spectra because such design spectrum has been derived from the study of a battery of responses in number of cases enough for its determination.
the response spectrum contains responses for a range of periods, not specific to a building. you will find the building response to each period you need to use (that you calculate) based on this plot.
okay!
thats was helpful.
now how to obtain a response spectrum based on seismic activity and soil properties of area where i have to design the building. |
