vulkan steel columns
has anyone ever heard of a vulkan supreme column? circa 1956
it is a steel tube column and i am just trying to get some properties for it. mainly how thick the wall is, and the yield stress.
the columns are 6" x 4"
a rectangular closed tube?
you need to drill two 1/4 inch test holes (in some convenient spot in each wall) and measure the wall thickness. (almost certainly, wall thickness will be the same in each wall though.)
to be most cautious, take a hollow-core sample to a lab and get metallurgy from the drilled pieces. knowing metal properties, knowing thickness, then calculate the properties. if you want to take a chance with the metal properties, compare a known modern steel tube shape to the measured shape, and assume a standard 30,000 steel capacity.

if the member is a cast piece, or a piece made by rolling in a horizontal mold, it may have a different wall thickness at the top and bottom. |
