programming newbie w/ a ?
good day,
just a quick question. i am starting to venture into the world of programming to help automate our design process. i have been introduced to using vb as a tool that can link excel and sw, and have been very impressed. are there any suggestions as to which version of vb i should tackle? i am looking at vb 2008 as it is the most current, but i can just as easily go back to vb 2005. any suggestions?
thx,
rhett

as for languages, the most commonly used ones are vba, vb.net, c#, and c++.
i think a common answer you will receive is to start with the vba editor that is included with solidworks. get a good grasp of this before moving any further. when the time comes, you may as well use vb 2008. i don't see any reason to use vb2005 if you have access to vb2008.
start with a rather easy macro. don't try and automate your entire product line in your first macro. download some sample macros and see what other people are doing. with what you learn taking small steps and examining other peoples work, you will be able to write more efficient and logical code. i would also suggest that you look into some online tutorials or buy a book or 2.
again i must reinforce. don't jump into the vb headfirst. start small and learn with the vba editor.
