is there an easy method to figure out if there are any entities on a given layer that are visible in the current view? i realize i could vectorize the file and get the list of used layers that way, but i was hoping there was a better method. i think i remember seeing the right kind of call, but i can't find it now.

for current view - no.
oddblayertablerecord has isinuse() method but it returns true if the layer is referenced by any entity.
