i am currently writing my company's standards. i just finishing the section on part and assembly naming convention (title/description creation) which i based off of asme y14.100 and the drm 10th edition section eight. what i would like to do next is develop a set of acceptable terms to help make it easier for my co-workers to name parts and to help promote consistancy. does anyone know of a good engineering resource/list to start from. or am i on my own? thanks tom asme y14.38 abbreviations & accronyms (used to be asme y1.1 and before that mil std 12, you may get the mil std off the internet for free but beware, there are differences per my post of the other day.) hi here is the text out of a drafitng manual that i have on hand. hope this helps. blq drafting manual baylor electromechanical systems (bes) standard 111--engineering drawing titles 1.0 scope this standard establishes requirements for the system used to title baylor electromechanical systems (bes) prepared engineering drawings. the drawing title is the name by which the part or assembly will be known. it shall consist of a noun or noun phrase followed by modifiers to distinguish it from other drawings in the drawing system. 2.0 requirements 2.1 title format a drawing title should be as brief as possible and still describe the part and distinguish between similar parts. each drawing in a drawing set must have a unique title. titles requiring modifiers shall be in two parts. see figure 1. 2.2 first part of title some general rules for developing the basic (first part) title are listed below. 1. no abbreviations may be used in the first part of the title except for the words assembly (assy), subassembly (subassy), and installation (instl). 2. the basic name shall be a noun or noun phrase that describes the part and its usage, notthe material or method of fabrication. thus, nouns such as "casting", "forging", or "weldment"shall not be used. 3. the noun or noun phrase shall be used in singular form except when the only form is plural, for example 'tongs. 4. the word "assembly" shall not be used as the first word in a noun phrase. the word "assembly" may be used after the noun name, such as cable assembly or cable assy. 5. nouns which have several meanings shall not be used alone as the first part of the title. instead, an acceptable noun phrase shall be formed as shown below: acceptable slide rule drafting machine running board unacceptable rule, slide machine, drafting board, running 6. a trademark or registered name shall not be used in a title except when the technical name is very cumbersome and the trade name is an accepted synonym. for example, use freon 12 instead of dichlorodifluormethane. 7. when an item is not a material or container, but its name ordinarily designates a material or container, a noun phrase shall form the basic name. for example: acceptable junction box cable drum soldering iron unacceptable box, junction drum, cable iron, soldering 8. the following words shall never be used alone to form a basic name, but may be the last word of a noun phrase: apparatus assembly assortment attachment compound device element equipment group installation kit machine mechanism outfit plant ship subassembly tackle tool unit vehicle in some cases, the words listed may be used as the first word of a basic phrase; for example, machine shop or tool kit. 9. the first part of the title may have modifiers or a modifying phrase if the modifiers serve to limit the noun by expressing degree, type, grade, variety, etc. the modifiers shall be separated from the noun or noun phrase by a comma and from any preceding modifier by a comma. for example: shaft, bevel gear. here "bevel gear" limits the word "shaft", as compared to any other shaft. also, the word "bevel" qualifies the word "gear" and therefore comes before the word "gear". it would be incorrect to use shaft, gear, bevel. 10. hyphens and dashes in type designators are not considered punctuation. 11. the conjunction "or" and the preposition "for" shall not be used in titles. 12. the first part of the title shall be separated from the second part by a dash. see figure 1. 2.3 second part of title the second part of the title consists of additional modifiers or modifying phrases as required. abbreviations may be used in the second part of the title. modifiers indicating what an item is (its shape, structure, or form) or what the item does (its function) are preferable to modifiers indicating the application (what it is used for) or location of the item (where it is used). see figure 2. only when two or more drawings are similar and the parts perform the same function should they be distinguished by additional modifiers indicating their location, relative position, forms, dimensions, etc. for example: panel, indicating, light transmitting- azimuth indicator, 28v good info, biglennyq. thanks! promoting, selling, recruiting and student posting are not allowed in the forums.
