does anyone know if a dormitory / apartment second floor live load is alload a reduction? according to the ibc 2000, a reduction is allowed. i could of sworn that the ubc 97 allowed a 40 lb/sqft live load for the bedroom areas to be reduced to 30 lb/sqft.

yes, there is a live laod reduction allowed in 1997 ubc. it is the same as the one in the ibc. you will not necesarily get a 25% reduction. the reduction is based on the tributary area supported by the structural
sperling - i believe it is:
%reduction = 0.08 (at - 150) <= 40%
