i'm trying to model a guy-wired aluminum tower in sap2000, but i can't find the right element to model a cable with. is there a tension only element or equivalent in sap 2000?

there is, there is a nnlink called a hook, which will allow only tension. the only thing is it isn't the easiest thing to use.
i agree with the above answer.you must be very careful allthough when giving properties in the hook element.you'll find a very good example of a structure with hook element in
