what is the best type of paint for use outside in an area close to the coast? best coating--hot dipped galvanizing next best--inorganic zinc over white metal you asked the $64,000,000 question. i have to evaluate coating proposed for us navy equipment all the time and i found this table a few years ago that i just love. it rates paint coatings on steel based on the surface preparation, environment and service life. i use it to specify performance with statements like: "coatings shall have a minimum expected life of 15 years in a seacoast marine heavy industrial envioronment when rated per nace paper no. 477 or similar nationally recognized rating system". this reference is a more concise table printed by a paint manufacturer. i have printed out the actual report but i couldn't find the web reference right off. it is from the 1996 inernational corrosion conference. interesting table, rockengineer. intriguing that no ratings are shown for galvanising, either as a stand alone coat or as the first of a system. since it was produced by a paint manufacturer, i guess that explains it. in a marine environment, that is. here is the original paper 477 by nace. |
