sorry another bom question
is there a function that will allow me to extract a bom from an assembly? basically i have many complex assemblies(the manufactured parts all have a manufacturing drawing)i have not yet created drawings for them, and to be honest i may not due to time constraints, i do however need to rip the parts lists out.
any thoughts, or do i have no choice other than creating drawings for my assemblies?

we use a macro written by lenny kikstra and available for download from his site called assemblybom. this should get you what you want.
sw2009 has introduced his ability.

right-click your bom table in the drawing, save as> excel file. this capability has been around a long time, at least since sw01.
