i find the examples very difficult to follow. there just doesn't seem to be enough commenting in them to say what is included and why in order to get a decent start for the learning curve for a fellow with "average" coding ability such as myself.
is there anyway, someone can send me an application with just enough #includes, linked libraries, etc....to start a single doc, mfc application that simply reads dwg files?

there is an example in examples/win/singledoc that demonstrates a simple mfc single document application. also, the developer's guide section of the dwgdirect.chm file contains general information about creating dwgdirect applications.
