could anyone out there tell me if the 070m20 spec is a suitable alternative to my requirement of bs s154??

absolutely not. 070m20 is a plain carbon steel with a carbon content of 0.16-0.24. s154 is a nickel-chromium-molybdeum steel with a carbon content of 0.27-0.35. the appropriate grade from bs 970 would be 826m31. see the following website for more information:
