astm a513
astm a513
does anyone have experience with substituting astm a513 square tubing for astm a500? astm a500 is recognized in the aisc as well as aisi cold-formed steel design manual, and is typically what is specified for structural applications. the issues that i am aware of are the low carbon content in the a513; therefore requiring the welders to be certified as well as the nominal dimensions are slightly different from a500 shapes. additionally, i have assumed the yield strength to be fy=50 ksi as a conservative number rather than fy = 86 ksi. has anyone had experience in using this as a structural element?
i'm not sure where you are working, but in every part of the us that i know of, all welded structural components must be welded by certified welders, whether a500, a513, a36 or others. the difference in this case is that the material might require a special procedure or special filler metal that takes is out of the realm of a pre-qualified welding procedure specification. check aws d1.1 for more information.
