brick veneer detail for residential bldg
brick veneer detail for residential bldg.
is there any reference material that shows how brick is placed in front of the exterior sheeting of a house? should there be a gap between the back of the brick and the plywood or the brick is directly attached to the plywood sheeting. should there be a 1/2" insulation like the one generally used behind the siding in the northeast?
thanks in advance.
find a job or post a job opening
you should have a moisture resistant backing on the sheathing and there should be a 1" min gap between the veneer and the sheathing. this air space should be vented to the outside surface. in addition, vents should be provided at the base to prevent moisture buildup and proper flashing should be used. the bottom vents should be broken up with 'vanes' to prevent bugs (bees, wasps, etc.) from entering.

to save you trouble, anything that is not structural (veneer, mortar) just use really light color when you print it. i let the mason do their job. i think it is very hard to put everything on your detail.
as the consultant, the detail should show the info that the mason would construct.
the reference material i would suggest is chapter 7 of the 2003 international residential code, which requires an 1" air space. as far as the insulation, it depends on what r vlaue you need to meet the energy code.
