building joints
i have a general question:
are there any guidelines or rules of thumb recommending building structural expansion joints in large 1-2 story steel framed buildings? i realize that for large buildings the fire wall location requirements would partially control.
i have checked aisc's design guide for low to mid-rise buildings. any other suggestions?
large means more than 200 feet in the smaller dimension. less than 350 feet may be designed without joints if unrestrained by connections to other structures.
the standard reference is "expansion joints in buildings", technical report no. 65, federal construction council, 1974. a graph that summarizes the recommendations is reproduced in the aisc steel manual, pci design handbook, and other texts.
here's a link for taro's reference...
thank you all. your information led me strait to what i needed.
