i know that the standard practice is to embed the cantilevered joist into the floor system twice the length of the cantilever. however, i have a client who wants to go out further and i was wondering if anyone knew how i could do this. thanks in advance.

i do not like rules of thumb. while they may be a good starting point for a blank calculation pad, you may very well be ok with only l=1 or even 1/2. just run the numbers as someone suggested, and see what you need.
