cores and shear walls sap and or etabs modelling
hello...
1 : when modelling cores and or shear walls , their are 2 methods to use..structurally who is more accurate?
a-modelling them as frame element acting in the centroid of the actual core , shear wall and making body constraints between the joints on the same shear wall or core of the storey
b-modelling them as vertical shell elements with the same shape as the actual walls
thanx in advance
you should use option b, but instead of using shell elements use membrane elements. etabs does not design shearwalls for out-of-plane bending. also, the first method only has one-point of connectivity to the slab, and it will not work well with openings.
method "a" is appropriate when the behaviour of shear wall is governed by flexture rather than shear.
thanx for replies ,
ash060 ,about the connectivity to the slab with the shear wall..that's why we make body constraints between the joints acting on the actual shear wall with the storey joints of the frame element so those joints will have the same deformations
